Electrical engineer
L. studied mechanical engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague and electrotechnics at the University of Liège. From 1902 to 1909 he worked at the František →Křižík’s factory in Prague. Then he became professor at the Czech Technical University in Brno and lectured on electrical structures. Until his retirement he spent 37 years lecturing on electrical machinery and apparatus, electrical appliances, railways and economics of power-plants. He gave much attention to the economic view of the company and encouraged his students to pursue a profession in the field of industry.
Together with professors Weyr and Engliš L. in 1913 prepared a draft law for the planning of electrification of Moravia, which was after the war extended to the whole of Czechoslovakia. He was also interested in the calorific power plant (Project of Brünner heating plant) and in electrification of agriculture and transport. In 1929 he and Belado made plans for the Prague Metro construction.
Establishment of the Czechoslovakian electrotechnical federation, his commitment to the area of technical standardization and the fact that he was the chairman of the international organization for standardization (1931) show that L. was a very successful scientific organizer. His scientific work consists of more than 600 publications and textbooks. After he resigned from the post of professor, L. also dealt with the history of electrical engineering.
