Mountain scientist

Between 1910 and 1913 G. studied at the Academy of Mining and Forestry in Banská Štiavnica. The First World War interrupted his studies, but he later completed his studies at the Mining University in Příbram. Starting in 1920, he worked in the department of state ironworks in Tisovec, where he participated in thorough modernization of the local ironworks. Reconstruction of ironworks was made under his leadership between 1931 and 1935. In his first scientific work from 1929 G. dealt with blast furnace slag. In 1932 he published the financial-economic evaluation of Tisovec blast furnace characteristics in terms of heat economy. In 1939 he became Director of metallurgical plant for the extraction of silver in Banská Štiavnica and the Head of State Joint Stock Company Kupferbergwerk AG Krompachy, copper mines. The following year he took over leadership of the Podbrezová company, mining and metallurgical joint-stock company in Prague and in 1942 the executives of state mint in Kremnica. During the Slovak national uprising G. saved precious metals, which were deposited in the Mint, before transporting them to Germany, which led to his arrestment by Gestapo. After the war he worked in the State Directorate of Mining in Bratislava. In 1947 he became member of the metallurgy group in the Central Planning Commission. He retired in 1955.
