B. studied physics at the University of Budapest. He began his career as a secondary school teacher, and afterwards worked as a university assistant at the Chair of Applied Physics. In 1920, he joined Max Born in Göttingen, but returned to Hungary in 1923, where he started working at the newly established research laboratory Tungsram-Werke (Egyesült Izzó).
His most important discovery is the krypton light bulb. On his initiative, Tungsram built a factory in Ajka for obtaining krypton gas from air. After the German occupation of Hungary in 1944, the company was in the beginning able to protect him from being arrested. After Jewish families began to be deported, B. ended up in a concentration camp, where he was murdered.
